Who are you? Most people don’t really know who they are? I love this scene from the movie “Anger Management” where Adam Sandler is asked “So Dave, tell us about yourself, who you are?”.
While this is just a comedy movie, there is some TRUTH to it, most people do not know who they are.
Honestly, I have struggled with this question as much as anyone.
So maybe its not JUST a movie — maybe it’s more. It has been said "Art Mirrors Consciousness."
“ART MIRRORS CONSCIOUSNESS”
The truth is most people identify more with their profession, education, letters behind their name, hobbies, possessions, socioeconomic status, and life stage than they do with their true self.
We are human “beings”, not human “doings”!
Why is it that most people attach their identity to the things they do?
My great friend Hunter Lessard is a former D1 baseball player and now, at 22 years old runs a successful business, podcast and mentors and inspires others. Could you image how much different his life might be after D1 if his identity was wrapped up in playing baseball.
Hunter puts it this way "You are infinite, don’t get caught up in what you do, focus on where you're going and who you are through action, behavior, and belief."
"You are infinite, don’t get caught up in what you do, focus on where you're going and who you are through action, behavior, and belief.'
Another friend of mine Austin Byler is a former major leaguer from the Arizona Diamond backs.
Austin understands this concept so well that after his major league career he started a company called Major League University.
Through Major League University Austin has built and educational platform to teach young athletes exactly what we are talking about. You are not baseball! He gives kids the tools to find their true identity outside of the game. That’s living a life of purpose through growth and contribution.
Austin puts it this way — “You are not defined by WHAT you do, you are defined by WHO you become.”
“You are not defined by WHAT you do, you are defined by WHO you become.”
So again I ask… Why is it that most people attach their identity to the things they do?
A combination of programming, conditioning through the socialized mind, past experiences, and ego (false self) tend to disconnect us from our true self.
How do we begin to make a shift and reconnect with our true authentic self?
3 things you must realize if you want to find your true authentic self:
You Are not your labels
You are not:
Whether it’s labels someone else placed on you or it’s labels you’ve placed on yourself, labels are hijacking your identity.
“I am” is a powerful beginning to any sentence and what follows becomes your identity.
Labels create fences and false identity.
Labels take something that has infinite potential and limits it to a labels definition.
James Arthur Ray one of the top thought leaders of our time puts it this way — When you label me you change me from a human being to a category of a thing.
“When you label me you change me from a human being to a category of a thing.”
You are not your past
Too many people carrying baggage and letting the past dictate their present reality as well as their future results. Zapping their happiness and fulfillment.
You can literally change your present reality and future outcomes by dealing with unresolved past emotional issues as well as learning to understand, overcome and utilize your fears.
Again James teaches it like this — The Past does not equal the future. We must learn from the past, apply the learning and move forward BOLDLY to create a better future.
James knows a thing or two about fulfilling a purpose. After having the metaphoric rug ripped out from under him in 2009 and watching his 20 million dollar empire crumble and having his public image destroyed he had every reason and excuse to quit on his purpose. But he didn't, WHY? Because he knows who he is and why he is here. James after losing everything still dedicates his life to helping others live their absolute best life by becoming their absolute best selves.
Check out his new book on Amazon "The Business Of Redemption" for the whole story. Mind Blowing to say the least.

you have work to do
If you want to live a life of purpose and passion, IT’S GOING TO TAKE SOME HARD WORK!
To find your true self is not easy.
You are going to have to gain a deeper understanding of your fears.
You are going to have to resolve past emotional issues.
You are going to have to start reprogramming your mind and break free from the prison of the socialized mind.
You are way more powerful than you’ve been lead to believe.
I believe each of us was put here for a purpose and our job is to continue to grow, find and fulfill that purpose for maximum impact on the world.
When we do not become what we were meant to become we short circuit the universe.
It is time to TAKE YOUR POWER BACK and become all you were born to be.
